This is our guide for new users. It also plays in the app when you open it for the first time.
{% endembed %}

## What is Fluid?

Fluid is the ultimate productivity app for Meta Quest. It allows you to work anywhere, at any time, on up to 11 browser windows at any given time. You can work in passthrough as well as our beautifully hand crafted Environments.

Please note that Fluid is an Early Access App and is currently under significant development. Features may change substantially. We're dedicated to enhancing user experience based on feedback. If you need assistance, have feature suggestions, bug reports, or frustrations with Fluid, please join our [Discord Server](https://discord.fluid.so) and let us know.

## Get started with Fluid

To get started with fluid, we recommend reading up on all the [Basics](/basics). You may also enjoy discovering our various [Features](/features).

# Basics

All the basics you need to know to use Fluid.

# Using Fluid

The basics of using Fluid.

# Using Fluid with your controllers

### Navigating the Web

To click on buttons or links, point your cursor at them and pull the trigger. To scroll, point your cursor at the page and use the thumb stick. To right click, use the "B" button on your [dominant hand controller](#dominant-hand). In the URL bar of the browser, The "B" button will act as an Enter/Return key so you can "Go" to websites.

To type in Fluid when using controllers only (e.g. when not using a Bluetooth keyboard), you can open the virtual keyboard with the Keyboard button found in the lower right hand corner of the Omnibox. You can either poke keys with the controller pointer when is close to you, or you can click on each key from a distance.&#x20;

### Moving Windows

When your cursor is pointed anywhere at a window, you can use the grip button on your controller to move it. You can bring it closer or move it farther away while gripping a window by using the thumb stick. You can also move windows by clicking and dragging from the white bar at the bottom of each window.&#x20;

### "Type what I say" (e.g. speech to text)

When your cursor is hovered over a text input, pressing and holding the "A" button on your dominant hand controller activates "speech to text" and Fluid will type whatever you say. You can use this for domain names ("YouTube dot com" will become \`youtube.com\`) or for regular sentences like sending a Discord message with "Hey, have you tried Fluid yet? Go download it!". When this mode is active, a big pulsing red dot appears near your controller.&#x20;

P.S. Your microphone is in your headset, not your controller, so no need to hold it up to your mouth when talking!&#x20;

### Reset your position

To reset your position in the virtual room, or bring your workspace back to yourself when you put the headset back on, press and hold the Oculus/Meta button on your right controller.&#x20;

### Dominant Hand

In Meta Quest, you can use the system settings to set which hand is your dominant hand. The default is Right.&#x20;

# Using Fluid with Hand Tracking

### **Getting Started with Hands**

When using Fluid with Hand tracking a cursor is attached to one of your hands. To switch the cursor to a specific hand, double pinch your index and thumb. A ray will appear for that hand which points to a cursor visual. Interacting with the cursor should feel similar to the system level hand tracking interactions. Fluid also supports direct touch interactions. Your cursor will disappear when your hand is close enough for you to directly poke/scroll windows and the Omnibox with your index finger.&#x20;

### Turning hands on or off

To switch from controllers to hands, set your controllers down on a solid surface. The app will switch to hand mode after a couple seconds.&#x20;

To toggle the hand visual on or off, look directly at your hand and double pinch with your index finger and thumb.&#x20;

### Navigating the Web

To click on buttons or links, point your cursor at them and pinch your index and thumb. To scroll pages, point your cursor at the page, pinch and drag in the direction you want to scroll. \
\
To type in Fluid when using hand only (e.g. when not using a Bluetooth keyboard), you can open the virtual keyboard by pressing into the Keyboard button in the Omnibox bottom right corner.

To right click, pinch with your middle finger and thumb. &#x20;

### Interacting with the Omnibox

To interact with the Omnibox, you can physically press buttons with your index finger. To move the Omnibox, you can grab it's movement bar beneath it.

### Moving and Closing Windows

When your cursor is pointed anywhere at a window, you can make a fist with your hands to grab and move it. You can bring it closer or move it farther away by moving your hand further or closer to you while in move mode. You can also move windows by pinching and holding at the white bar beneath any window. To close a window, click the "X" button to the right of the move bar which appears when you hover over the dot to the right of the bar.

### Reset your position

To reset your position in the virtual room, or bring your workspace back to yourself when you put the headset back on, trigger the Oculus/Meta button on your right hand. To do this, open your right hand, look at it then pinch and hold with your index finger and thumb.

### "Type what I say" (e.g. speech to text)

When your cursor is hovered over a text input, pinching your fingers and holding them activates "speech to text" and Fluid will type whatever you say. You can use this for domain names ("Youtube dot com" will become \`youtube.com\`) or for regular sentences like sending a Discord message with "Hey, have you tried Fluid yet? Go download it!". When this mode is active, a big pulsing red dot appears near the cursor.&#x20;

See [Flow Typing and Voice Commands](/basics/flow-typing-and-voice-commands).&#x20;

# Using Fluid with a Mouse & Keyboard

The recommended way to use Fluid is with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. To get started, ensure your device is connected to the headset via Bluetooth or USB. To find out how, check out [Meta's official guide for connecting Bluetooth devices to your headset](https://www.meta.com/help/quest/articles/headsets-and-accessories/using-your-headset/connect-compatible-bluetooth-device/).

## Supported Devices

Fluid is built to support many different Keyboards and Mice from your favorite manufacturers. This ensures that you can just hop in and start working. Please keep in mind that certain special features of certain keyboards may not be supported, such as macro keys that are configured within the manufactures software.&#x20;

Fluid supports a number of different international keyboard layouts. You can see which layouts we support [here](/basics/keyboard-layouts-and-shortcuts#supported-layouts).

{% hint style="info" %}
There is a known issue with Apples Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad that is preventing two finger scrolling from working on Android Devices. You can work around this by holding Ctrl + Shift on your keyboard while moving your mouse, which will send scroll events.

If you'd like to see if a specific keyboard or mouse has been tested, feel free to ask about that specific model in our [Discord Server](https://discord.com/invite/fluidsim).
{% endhint %}

## Navigating the Web

Using your mouse and keyboard in Fluid should feel very similar to any traditional desktop browser you've used before. You can click buttons, select and copy text and do everything you're used to.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Certain Keyboard shortcuts may not work entirely correctly. If this is the case, feel free to tell us in our [Discord Server](https://discord.com/invite/fluidsim).
{% endhint %}

## Moving a window

To move a window using your mouse, simply click and drag the top of the window. To move the window closer or further away from you, simply scroll while moving the window. You can also press the middle mouse button, which will lock the window to your mouse, allowing you to move it around more easily.&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
If you'd like to use any regular Mouse 3 functions, you can disable Middle Click to Move in your [Settings](/basics/settings).&#x20;
{% endhint %}

<details>

<summary>Summoning your dock and all of your windows in-front of you</summary>

To summon your dock in front of you, simply look at the palm of your non-dominant hand and pinch your fingers. By default, this will be your left hand unless you've changed your dominant hand in the system settings. You can also press the Hamburger Button on your left controller to do so.

If you want to bring all your windows in-front of you, take your left controller and hold the Hamburger button until you see all your windows jumping right in-front of you.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Reset your position</summary>

If you want to reset your position in the virtual room, or bring your workspace back to yourself when you put the headset back on, look at the palm of your dominant hand, then pinch and hold your fingers. By default, this will be your right hand unless you've changed your dominant hand in the system settings. You can also hold the Meta/Oculus button on your right controller to do so.

If you have enabled the expanded quick actions in your settings, simply look at the plam of your dominant hand, then pinch and hold your fingers to select "Recenter". Then, just look forward and wait until your position is reset.

# Keyboard Layouts and shortcuts

Using a physical keyboard is by far the best way to work in Fluid. Physical Keyboards allow you to type faster and more accurately than floating keyboards, improving speed and accuracy.

## Keyboard Layouts

Fluid currently supports a few Keyboard Layouts for external keyboards, including Bluetooth and wired. It is important to note that these layouts currently do not apply to the in-app floating keyboard, but that feature is in the works.

### Supported Layouts

<table data-view="cards"><thead><tr><th>Language</th><th>Layout</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>English</td><td>QWERTY (USA)</td></tr><tr><td>French</td><td>AZERTY</td></tr><tr><td>German</td><td>QWERTZ</td></tr><tr><td>Ukranian</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>Russian</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>Polish</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>Swedish</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>Japanese</td><td>Romaji to Kana conversion</td></tr><tr><td>Spanish </td><td>Latin American and Spain</td></tr></tbody></table>

If you'd like to request new keyboard layouts, please do so on our [Feature Requesting Forum](https://fluid.canny.io).

## Keyboard Shortcuts

To use a keyboard shortcut, press and hold one or more modifier keys and then press the last key of the shortcut. For example, to use Command-C (copy), press and hold the Command key, then the C key, then release both keys.

### Modifier Keys

* Control (CRTL)
* Windows Key ⊞ or Command (⌘)&#x20;
* Shift ⇧
* Alt or Option (⌥)

On Windows keyboards, the modifier keys are (from left to right) Ctrl, Windows, and Alt. On Mac keyboards, the keys are Ctrl, Option, and Command. In Fluid, the Windows key and the Command key perform the same function.

### Shortcuts

# Flow Typing and Voice Commands

Control Fluid with you mind... or at least your voice.

## Flow Typing

Flow Typing is designed to get around the issues of slow and clunky floating keyboards by allowing to say what you want to type.&#x20;

### How can I use Flow Typing?

With your dominant hand, pinch and hold inside of a part of a website you would typically type into. Say what you want to type, then release the pinch. Watch your words appear!

## Voice Commands

Voice Commands are triggered with the "peace sign" hand gesture. The following are examples of currently working commands. We will add more over time. Do the peace sign with either hand, speak, and then stop doing to peace sign. This can be used alongside Flow Typing for even more control.

### Windows Management

<table><thead><tr><th width="234">Voice Command</th><th>Action</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>"Open [website]"<br>"Go to [website]"</td><td>Opens a new Window with the provided Website. This works best with well known websites and often doesn't require saying "dot com" or similar domain endings.</td></tr><tr><td>"Open Window"</td><td>Opens a new window with a blank tab.</td></tr><tr><td>"Close Window"</td><td>Closes the active window. You may need to click on a window first if none are active.</td></tr><tr><td>"Close Tab"</td><td>Closes the currently open tab in an active window.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Text manipulation

<table><thead><tr><th width="237">Voice Command</th><th>Action</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>"Copy"</td><td>Copies any selected text to your clipboard.</td></tr><tr><td>"Paste"</td><td>Pastes the copied text from your clipboard.</td></tr><tr><td>"Delete"</td><td>Deletes any selected text in an input field.</td></tr><tr><td>"Select All"</td><td>Selects all text in an input field.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Passthrough

<table><thead><tr><th width="230">Voice Command</th><th>Action</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>"Toggle passthrough"</td><td>Toggles between passthrough modes.</td></tr><tr><td>"Enable passthrough"</td><td>Enables full passthrough.</td></tr><tr><td>"Disable Passthrough"</td><td>Disables full passthrough.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Predefined Shortcuts

<table><thead><tr><th width="233">Voice Command</th><th>Action</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>"Go to Google Sheets"</td><td>Opens a new window with Google Sheets.</td></tr><tr><td>"Go to Google Docs"</td><td>Opens a new window with Google Docs.</td></tr><tr><td>"Go to Google Slides"</td><td>Opens a new window with Google Slides.</td></tr><tr><td>"Go to settings"</td><td>Opens the settings app.</td></tr><tr><td>"Go to passwords"</td><td>Opens the built-in password manager.</td></tr><tr><td>"Go to fluid"</td><td>Opens the fluid website.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Currently, everything should work in English, German, French, Spanish and Swedish.

### Can I add my own voice commands?

At the moment, it is not possible to add your own voice commands. However, we plan to add this feature some time in the future.

# Features

# Fluid Link

The desktop companion app for Fluid

Fluid Link allows you to use applications your Windows or Mac computer alongside native Fluid browser windows. You can download it at <https://fluid.so/fluid-link>.

## What does it offer?

Fluid Link lets you stream any application on your computer in a floating, standalone window. Additionally, you can stream your entire screen, and interact with it through the Keyboard and Mouse you have connected to your Headset.

There is a free trial mode, which allows you to work in sessions of 15 minutes. After that, you will either have to restart the Fluid Link Client on your computer, or unlock unlimited time using a one-time payment of $10.99 (€9.99) within the app.

### Features

* Stream any app from your computer as an individual window, or cast your screen.
* Interact with your computer directly through Fluid, including mice and keyboards connected straight to your headset.
* Your streams are securely encrypted and stays on your local WiFi network.
* Ability to share the clipboard between your computer and your headset for the most seamless productivity experience.
* Free trial mode (works 15 min at a time), otherwise a one-time payment of $10.99 (€9.99) to unlock unlimited time, purchased from inside of Fluid.

## What will be added in the future?

We are planning to add the ability to upload/download files from your computer, as well as making it so that you can use Fluid Link on multiple computers at once. Sound passthrough is also currently not supported, but this will be added in a later update.

## Sidenotes

* Fluid Link is primarily optimized for productivity, and therefore, watching videos (including Netflix) will be a sub-optimal experience.
* Fluid Link does not work on some shared WiFi networks, which may include those of Public Coffee Shops, Airports, Hotels and more.
* For now, your apps need to be visible on your physical monitors to be streamable.
* Fluid Link is currently still in beta. Bugs, missing features and performance issues are a given. If you're experiencing any unexpected issues, feel free to tell us on our [discord server](https://discord.fluid.so).
* The on-headset Fluid Link App only works using the Gecko Engine. If you see a "Cleartext not permitted" error, it means that it's trying to open up Fluid Link using Chromium. You can switch engines in the 3-dot menu on the top right.

# Spaces

Spaces allow you to save groups of windows.

### What are Spaces?&#x20;

Spaces let you organize and save groups of windows. When you switch from a space, your windows remain as you left them, enabling easy resumption later. You can set a window configuration as the "default" for a space and return to this setup

### Creating a Space

From the Spaces tab in the Omnibox, click the "+New space" button. You can choose to bring your current windows with you or create an empty space.&#x20;

### Saving a new default

Once the Shared Window has been deleted all data is destroyed and the instance is completely shut down.

# Fluid Passwords

How to use the Fluid Password Manager

{% hint style="info" %}
This page only discusses FPM and does not talk about services such as Bitwarden, Lastpass, OnePassword and others. You can pin these services to the [Dock](/basics/dock) for easy access. To find out how to enable the Bitwarden extension, read [Extensions](/features/extensions).
{% endhint %}

FPM (Fluid Password Manager) is our natively integrated password manager for Fluid. Unlike cloud services like LastPass, FPM operates entirely on your device, ensuring that your password data remains on your headset. You can access it by clicking the keys icon in the Omnibox, or by going to `fluid://passwords` in any non-shared browser window.

### FAQs&#x20;

<details>

<summary>How do I get my passwords into the Fluid Password Manager?</summary>

To use the Fluid Password Manager, you need to create an encrypted password vault. Since this feature is being released early, there is currently no easy built-in tool to create this vault. We highly recommend you use the official Keeweb app for this, which you can find at [app.keeweb.info](https://app.keeweb.info).

In the [Keeweb App](https://app.keeweb.info/), you can either start from scratch or import a CSV file of your passwords. Keeweb also supports uploading encrypted Bitward Json exports. If you made the vault on another device, you can use Discord, Google Drive, [Fluid Link](/features/fluid-tunnel) or other tools to transfer it to your headset. From there, press on import, navigate to it using the file picker, open it and then resume Fluid.

Congratulations, your passwords are now in Fluid!

</details>

<details>

<summary>Does this give Fluid or anyone else access to my passwords?</summary>

Fluid does not have access to any passwords that you store within FPM. Your passwords remain in your locally stored and encrypted file, and the web app auto-locks after you close it or leave the window inactive for more than a few minutes. We never log your keystrokes, clipboard, or anything like that. This is to ensure that none of your password data leaves the headset.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How do I know it is secure?</summary>

FPM is built on the Keeweb project, an open source Keepass compatible password manager that you can run in the browser. It uses secure, encrypted files as the password storage backend.

Furthermore, we are also releasing the source code for FPM publicly, so you can see any changes we made and confirm the security for yourself. This source code can be found at <https://github.com/FluidXR/Fluid-Password-Manager>.

Please bear with us while we update the Readme from the default Keeweb info.

</details>

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask in our [Discord Server](https://discord.fluid.so).

# Fluid Tunnel

A way to send text / passwords from a non VR headset to Fluid - WIP

{% hint style="info" %}
This feature is in early development and may change drastically!
{% endhint %}

Fluid Tunnel (formerly called Fluid Link, name stolen for our desktop streaming client) is a way to send text and files between a non-VR device and Fluid.\
You can find it by going to [link.fluid.so](https://link.fluid.so).

# Extensions

{% hint style="warning" %}
Extensions only work in the Gecko Mode. To learn more about the differences between Chromium mode and Gecko mode, as well as how to change between them, read [this](/browser-engines).
{% endhint %}

Fluid supports over 100 of the top extensions for Firefox. These extensions include Password Managers, Ad blockers and many other kinds of extensions, allowing you to customize the browsing experience in any way you'd like.

<details>

# Browser Engines

Fluid allows user to choose between multiple browser engines. There are currently two engines supported in Fluid.

* Chromium, which is used in many browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Arc and many more.
* Gecko, which is used in Mozilla Firefox, and also acts as the base for Mozilla Thunderbird.

### Switching Engines Globally

To change the engine used for all new browser tabs and windows, go to the [Settings](/basics/settings), then General Settings and click on the browser engine you want. Be aware that this does not affect any window that is already open. If you want to switch all windows to the selected engine, either close and re-open all the windows, or restart Fluid.

{% hint style="info" %}
Cookies and logins are not synced between engines. If you switch the engine, you will have to log back into all websites.
{% endhint %}

<div align="center" data-full-width="false"><figure><img src="/files/YUAUfSGLO9X5fpJjspNu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

### Switching Engines Per Tab

To switch the browser engine per tab, click the three-dot menu at the top and select either "Chromium" or "Gecko." The current selection is highlighted with a white outline. Keep in mind that this option currently resets when you re-open Fluid.

# Changelog

Official Changelog for production releases

* Shared cloud browser window clarity fixed. Enhancements
* New mode for use in full passthrough that increases window resolution/clarity. Turn this on in General Settings. Note; windows will have sharp corners, but only in full passthrough. (Necessary trade off for how we make text sharp in the app.)

## v0.29.0

### New Feature: Reality Blending & Reality Blend Modes

We have removed the old desk passthrough window in favor of what we're calling "reality blending", which seamlessly combines mixed reality and immersive content to let you see your desk surface in real life while being immersed in a beautiful virtual space. You can change the shape of the passthrough region via "reality blend modes". Currently there are two.

You can activate reality blending by clicking the passthrough button on the dock, which cycles between fully immersive, blend, and full passthrough. The settings for passthrough and reality blending now live in a new section in the settings app. You can adjust the passthrough area's shape and size there.

### Auto-Hide URL Bar

We've consolidated the functionality of the fullscreen window by hiding the URL bar when it's not actively being hovered. You can now quickly show the url bar by moving your cursor above any fullscreen window and it will automatically disappear when you move your cursor away. You can turn this mode on/of for any window via the window settings menu.

### Tweaks & Bug Fixes

* keyboard not clearing preview text correctly fixed
* windows no longer load in at old teleport locations
* fixed hands not being active at first startup

* Reduced window flashes when using reality blending passthrough
